 (Halifax, NS) The 2017 TD Halifax Jazz Festival is proud to partner with leading multi-platform music provider, Stingray, to present the Stingray Rising Stars program at this year's festival. Stingray, via its Stingray Music service, thereby reaffirms its commitment to support Canadian music talent and contribute to increasing their national and international profiles. The Stingray Rising Stars program sets out to discover, encourage, promote and champion new up-and-coming Canadian artists. Launched in 1998 as Galaxie Rising Star, the program is presented at a variety of music festivals and conferences each year. This year’s Stingray Rising Stars finalists will perform on the Waterfront Main Stage (Lower Water Street & Salter Street) every afternoon beginning at 2:30pm from Wednesday, July 12 through Sunday, July 16. Stingray Music is a multiplatform music service deployed across the world and currently included in the service offering of pay TV providers and entertainment content providers. With over 2,000 curated music channels in all the most popular genres, Stingray Music opens up a world of amazing musical discoveries. Quebec trumpeter and composer Rachel Therrien won the 2016 Stingray Rising Stars prize by public vote at last year’s jazz festival. Therrien is an inspired bandleader whose diverse musical interests extend to Cuba and Colombia. Considered one of the most promising jazz musicians in the Quebec music scene, winning the 2016 Stingray Rising Stars award was a huge vote of confidence for Therrien and helped give her the resources to further her career and support her artistic vision. The shows are free, and this year's lineup includes: Quinn Bachand’s Brishen: Stingray Rising Stars series kicks off Wednesday, July 12, at 2:30 with Quinn Bachand’s Brishen, a Roma/Folk/gypsy jazz ensemble from Victoria, BC. Brishen, Romany for ‘bringer of the storm,’ is what Quinn and his talented band (Reuben Wier, Alan Mackie, Peyton Plenninger and Matt Pease) serve up with their original western and euro-Roma swing homage. They introduce a space where virtuosity meets vibe, leaving you with a sense of jubilance and nostalgia. Only A Visitor: The Stingray Rising Stars contestant on Thursday, July 13 is Vancouver art pop band Only A Visitor. Fronted by composer/arranger Robyn Jacob, this west coast quintet is redefining avant-pop music with songs that focus on vocal harmonies taking over the traditionally grounding role of the keyboards, bass and drums. Often compared with Bjork or the Dirty Projectors, Jacob’s eclectic songwriting is guided by her decades-long study in piano and commitment to avant garde new music. Allison Au: Juno-award winning jazz saxophonist Allison Au performs on the Waterfront Main Stage on Friday, July 14. Jazz Saxophonist, Composer and Arranger, Allison Au refuses to be defined. Her music weaves a mosaic of influences into a seamless and soulful sound, a concoction steeped in the tradition of Jazz but skillfully laced with elements of Classical, Pop, R&B/hip hop, Latin, and world music. Melissa Lauren: Swing by the Main Stage on Saturday, July 15 to hear Toronto singer and songwriter Melissa Lauren. Melissa Lauren has smoothly made the transition from veteran swing crooner to dynamic songwriter. Melissa’s music is her own brand of old school jazz, doo-wop, and blues mixed with indie pop inflections, and is very much a product of her early musical training meshing with her adult musical encounters. Parker Abbott Trio: On Sunday, July 16, Toronto’s Parker Abbott Trio closes out the series. This keyboard-centric group explore the intersections between two pianists and a drummer—and use a huge sonic palette to do so. Using a plethora of keyboard instruments and a pan-stylistic approach to composition and improvisation, the trio has created an utterly original, multi-faceted jazz sound that has been called “an ethereal wonderland of sound and texture.” Through a two-tiered process of peer assessment and online voting, one act will receive $3,000 to jumpstart their career.
