For the 2019 season, HJF is proud to present, for the first time in Atlantic Canada, critically-acclaimed Swedish duo First Aid Kit, touring their album, Ruins (2018) on Wed, July 10 on the Waterfront Stage. Klara and Johanna Söderberg became known internationally in 2008 as teenagers with their YouTube video cover of the Fleet Foxes' Tiger Mountain Peasant Song, which became a huge Internet hit. They’ve gone on to release four full-length albums, won multiple Grammi Awards (Swedish Grammys) and maintained an exhaustive international touring schedule, performing for the likes of Patti Smith, Paul Simon, and Emmylou Harris, for whom they wrote the song “Emmylou.” Of their live show, The Guardiansaid, “There’s rare power in a performance this heartfelt.”
Opening the night is Tim Baker (best known as writer and front-man of Newfoundland’s acclaimed Hey Rosetta!). Tim’s highly anticipated debut solo album, Forever Overhead, arrives April 19 via Arts & Crafts. The album sees Tim taking his music in a new direction with songs of connectivity and the tender emotions. Performing his new album alongside a full band, Tim has already sold out two shows in Halifax this May.
On the Waterfront Stage HJF welcomes Bahamas and The Barr Brothers Thur, July 11. Having sold out his last two Halifax shows at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium, Bahamas (aka Afie Jurvanen) returns to the city with his latest release, Earthtones. The LP took home the 2019 JUNO for Adult Alternative Album of the Year, and received a Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album - Non-Classical. Bahamas is a streaming juggernaut, who averages over 1.6 million monthly streaming listeners. The single “All The Time” generated a staggering 32 million streams and counting and “Stronger Than That” cracked 9 million. Bahamas has opened for Jack Johnson, Robert Plant, Wilco, The Lumineers and City and Colour.
The Barr Brothers are namesake siblings Brad and Andrew Barr, and harpist Sarah Pagé. From Montreal, they will bring their brand of folk/Delta blues to Halifax, performing music from their latest release Queens of the Breakers. The Barr Brothers have toured throughout North America and Europe, with notable appearances including Osheaga, the Late Show with David Letterman, and a headline slot on the main stage Scène TD de la place des Festivals at the Montreal Jazz Festival. They headlined a sold out show at the Marquee Ballroom in Halifax last fall.
At St. Paul’s Church, where this year HJF is presenting a series of shows for the jazz aficionado’s in Halifax’s oldest building, hear the Liebman/Murley Quartet on Thur, July 11. David Liebman has played with jazz masters including Miles Davis, Elvin Jones, Chick Corea, and more. Joining him for a night of contemporary jazz are Mike Murley, one of Canada's leading jazz artists, having performed on 12 JUNO winning albums; Order of Canada member Terry Clarke, who has recorded over 300 albums; and Jim Vivian, one of the most in demand bassists in Canada, who is a jazz bass instructor and lecturer at the University of Toronto.
