In its 32 years, TD Halifax Jazz Festival has presented the best and brightest artists from the world of jazz, funk, R&B, hip hop, and more, and this year is no different as the festival presents the Queen of Funk, Chaka Khan Thursday, July 12; Juno award-nominated, Canadian blues guitarist and singer-songwriter Matt Andersen playing with The Mellotones, along with Canadian folk rock husband-and-wife duo Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland of Whitehorse the night of Saturday, July 14.
With more than 55,000 attendees yearly, nearly 500 volunteers, presenting over 400 performers on 18 stages, and featuring over 60 local acts, the TD Halifax Jazz Festival is Atlantic Canada’s oldest jazz and largest summer festival. Presenting great music in every quarter of the city in an atmosphere of musical diversity that captures jazz in all its forms. This year, the festival explodes with world class entertainment for everyone presenting musical stages on the Halifax Waterfront, at St. Matthew’s Church, and at The Carleton, with more shows and series to be announced.
Chaka Khan is one of the world’s most gifted and celebrated musicians, with a rich musical legacy, the 10-time Grammy Award-winner is looking forward to a celebration of a lifetime. A songwriter, actor, author, philanthropist, entrepreneur and activist, Chaka Khan has influenced generations of recording artists. She has the rare ability to sing in seven music genres, including R&B, pop, rock, gospel, country, world music, and classical. Affectionately known around the world as Chaka, she is revered by millions of fans as well as her peers for her timeless, classic and unmatched signature music style and ability. Throughout her legendary career, Chaka has released 22 albums and racked up ten #1 Billboard magazine charted songs, seven RIAA certified gold singles and ten RIAA certified gold and platinum albums. Chaka Khan tickets will be $65.00, available for purchase beginning Friday, Apr 13 at 10am.
Matt Andersen & The Mellotones is a rollicking, sizzling combination of Andersen's thunderous voice and hot guitar playing matched with the eight-piece force of nature that is The Mellotones. Andersen calls it "the most drastic thing I could do," a far cry from his usual one guy, one guitar context. "I make an impact when I'm solo by getting them with the quiet parts more than the loud parts. With a band it's the opposite." And if you're going to have a band, it should be The Mellotones. Long a staple of Halifax's live music scene, the band features a smoking horn section along with keys, drums, and more. A stirringly soulful singer with powerful songs and a live band that cooks - don't miss this performance! Tickets for Matt Andersen & The Mellotones with Whitehorse will be $42.50, available for purchase beginning Friday, Apr 13 at 10am.
Glam and sleaze, desert grit and subway rats, scum-bags, hot messes and cold shoulders: welcome to the world of Whitehorse. Whitehorse’s brazen sonic breadth encompasses psychedelic surf, arid border rock, lo-fi ingenuity, and icy 80’s sparseness. The new album, Panther in the Dollhouse, brings a twist to Whitehorse’s studio approach with the addition of beats and bleeps from NYC hip-hop production duo Like minds (Kanye West, Snoop Dogg). But while each new album sees the duo’s sound evolve, the essence of Whitehorse’s musical identity remains their dizzying guitar playing and vocal chemistry. Show starts at 8:30pm, tickets for Whitehorse with Matt Andersen & The Mellotones will be $42.50, available for purchase beginning Friday, Apr 13 at 10am.
Toronto based Indie-Pop band Alvvays (pronounced “Always”) fronted by Cape Breton’s Molly Rankin, released Antisocialites – the much-anticipated follow-up to Alvvays’ 2014 self-titled debut – in September of 2017. Across its 10 tracks and 33 minutes the group dive back into the deep end of reckless romance and altered dates. Through thoughtful consideration in basement and abroad, Alvvays has renewed its Scot-pop vows with a powerful new collection of manic emotional collage. Alvvays to open for The War on Drugs, Wednesday, July 11. Tickets for this show are $52.50 (includes HST & fees, 19+ ID required), purchase here.
