“Creative Music Workshop is teaching music with a capital M.” - Jerry Granelli, Artistic Director, Creative Music Workshops [Halifax] The 24th annual TD Halifax Jazz Festival Creative Music Workshops take place July 6 - 14, 2019. In addition to its mission to present world-class jazz and related music every summer on stages throughout Halifax, the Jazz Festival provides opportunities for artistic development and music education. The centerpiece of the Jazz Festival’s music education program is the eight-day Creative Music Workshop (CMW) presented annually by a distinguished faculty as well as to provide performance opportunities during the Jazz Festival. Faculty this year are distinguished educators and musicians from around the world, including CMW founder and director Jerry Granelli (head instructor, drums, Halifax), J. Anthony Granelli (electric bass, New York), Michael Blake (saxophone, New York), Christian Kogel (guitar, Berlin), and Susanne Chui (Dance/Movement, Halifax), Peggy Lee (cello - Vancouver), and Doug Cameron (Percussion- Halifax). The CMW 'Creative Process' is a week long program, held in the mornings, where creative minds of all disciplines, including music, dance and visual arts, learn to deepen their creative practice. Attendees learn the fundamental principles of the CMW Creative Process through a range of collective and individual exercises such as improvisation, movement, listening and communication. Students work with each other and the CMW faculty to explore risk taking, fear and self consciousness in relation to their creative process. The program passes on knowledge not only about what it means to be a musician, dancer, etc., but what it means to be a creative person. The CMW Core Program offers artists of all disciplines and skill levels, aged 15* or older, the knowledge and experience required to take their artistic practice to the next level. In addition to learning the fundamentals of the CMW Creative Process, students play with each other for up to eight hours a day and receive intensive instruction from a renowned faculty as well as performance opportunities at the TD Halifax Jazz Festival. Bonus: Core Program students receive an All Events Pass to the 2019 TD Halifax Jazz Festival. Early bird pricing of $375 is on now for the Core Program until April 19, 2019 -- afterwards the price returns to $450. CMW Creative Process program is $179. Since it was founded in 1996 by world-renowned percussionist Jerry Granelli, saxophonist Don Palmer, and bassist Skip Beckwith, the Creative Music Workshop has been a central component of the Halifax Jazz Festival. Over the years, it has been instrumental in fostering a strong artistic community not just in Halifax, but across North America. CMW alumni have gone on to become professional artists, educators and creative individuals worldwide. CMW gathers renowned musicians and educators from across North America and internationally who possess exceptional skills as educators and improvising musicians. Participants gain knowledge through experiential learning as faculty share their expertise with students through a range of activities, mentor-ship, live performance preparation, and ensemble work. The CMW program is open to all artistic disciplines including dance and visual arts.
