Multiple Grammy Award winning artist Ms Lauryn Hill to play the TD Halifax Jazz Festival Main Stage July 12, 2016 (Halifax, NS) TD Halifax Jazz Festival is thrilled to present world renowned, multiple award winning jazz/R&B/hip hop artist Ms Lauryn Hill, playing the festival Main Stage on the Halifax waterfront, Tuesday evening, July 12, 2016 -- the 30th anniversary of the festival. Tickets go on sale Thursday, April 7 at 10am. This genre-fusing artist rocketed to worldwide acclaim with the 1998 release of her first solo recording, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, selling nearly a half million copies in its first week, and producing several hit singles including her chart topping "Doo Wop (That Thing).” The album's success propelled Hill to international recognition as a solo artist, and contributed to bringing hip hop and neo soul to the forefront of popular music. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill earned ten Grammy nominations, and won five Grammy awards, making Hill the first woman to receive that many Grammy nominations and awards in one night. By 2013, the album sold more than eight million copies in the US and more than 19 million copies worldwide. Born in New Jersey, Hill attended Columbia University. She first established a reputation in the music world as the lone female member of the mid-nineties hip hop/soul powerhouse band The Fugees, whose repertoire included elements of soul and Caribbean music, particularly reggae. The band was a multi-platinum and Grammy-winning success, widely known for its hit songs including the single, "Killing Me Softly,” among many others. Live music is essential to Halifax, and the TD Halifax Jazz Festival is a vitally important part of summer in the city. This year’s addition of Ms Lauryn Hill, a genre-spanning artist with mass appeal across generations, will introduce even more music fans to the festival.
