(Halifax, NS)- Halifax Jazz Festival is celebrating the season with Jazz Up Your Spring, a series of JazzLabs taking place around Halifax in April. This year’s Jazz Up Your Spring will take place at Halifax North Memorial Library, Dartmouth Woodlawn Public Library, and The Khyber Centre. JazzLabs offer a behind the scenes look at making music and include concerts, artist talks, and opportunities for audience interaction. Jazz Up Your Spring kicks off Saturday, April 8th, with “Finding Your Groove” percussion workshop with percussionist Inti Gonzales at the Halifax North Memorial Library. On Saturday April 15th, the Willem Paynter Trio will be playing at the Dartmouth Woodlawn Public Library. Music continues on Thursday, April 27th with “Free Form,” presenting experimental improvisers chik white, and New Hermitage at The Khyber Centre. Complete details on the artist's, times, and venues follow: “FINDING YOUR GROOVE” Percussion Workshop w/ Inti Gonzales APRIL 8th, 2017 3:30-5:00pm Halifax North Memorial Library, 2285 Gottingen St. Inti Gonzales is a performer with many years of experience in latin and world percussion. In this hour long workshop, he will be guiding musicians of all skill levels in answering the question, “what is groove?” and developing your own sound. Originally from Mexico City, Inti began his musical studies at the age of five years old. Inti had various training and complementary materials, such as music theory, choir, music appreciation, organology, history of music, theatre, body language (corporal expression), and the study of violin and percussion. His musical training as a percussionist has been particularly focused on studies of African, Cuban, and Brazilian percussion. This allowed him to participate in many social and cultural events, including the Festival of Percussion at the National Arts Centre in Mexico City, the International Percussions Festival, Montreal, The Halifax Jazz Festival, Halifax, and many other festivals and concerts. Inti has also facilitated workshops and tutorials, sharing his knowledge of percussion instruments, such as Bongo, Djembe, Cajon, Congas and minor percussion. Creator of "Zulkamoon" music band based out of Halifax, and currently playing with "The Chronos Band." He has collaborated with musicians like "Jorun Bombay," "The Caravan," et. al. Willem Paynter Trio April 15th, 2017, 1pm Dartmouth Woodlawn Public Library, 31 Eisener Blvd. Jazz bassist Willem Paynter has been part of the Atlantic Canadian music scene since 2005. During that time he has participated in several recordings and countless festival, concert and club performances with musicians from all generations. Willem has appeared in groups lead by Jeff Goodspeed, Bill Stevenson, Andrew Jackson’s “Blakey Project” and many more. “FREE FORM” w/ chik white and New Hermitage April 27, 2017 Doors 7:30, Show 8pm Khyber Centre for The Arts, 1880 Hollis St. Join us for this FREE show at The Khyber featuring two new acts on the experimental improvising scene: chik white: For over a decade, Nova Scotia artist Darcy Spidle has used the moniker, chik white, for various art projects. His latest efforts centre around the jaw harp, a pancultural, ancient instrument steeped in mystical allure. Inspired by sound poetry, noise, improvisation, Dada, meditation and nature, chik white's harp explorations aim to conjure visceral experiences through aural minimalism. New Hermitage: The New Hermitage continues Andrew MacKelvie's lifelong fascination with sound. This collection of quiet, sparse, compositions set alongside field recordings asks the listener to consider the beauty and complexity of their sonic reality.
