The Prairie Kitchen Party is renowned for electrifying in the round collaborations — this is a not-to-be-missed finale event. Daytime programming takes place all throughout the church, beginning at 11am on Saturday and Sunday. It will comprise of instructional workshops in cartooning, crankie-making, shadow puppetry, among other forms of visual art. There will also be workshops on many acoustic instruments such as fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, bass, step dancing, throat singing, as well as creative song-writing workshops. Also during the day we will have feature sessions with songwriters in the round, a silent movie showcase, with local musicians playing the soundtrack they create, live, as well as concerts, and demonstrations. On Sunday the daytime programming will feature the “Open Crank” where festival attendees can get up with festival musicians to perform their Crankie that was made over the weekend, or in the last year. Crankie Fest promises to bring people from all walks of life to participate, on and off stage, for an interactive and collaborative festival experience by introducing the community to “crankies,” a storytelling art form that was popular in the 19th Century and was a forerunner of modern day film. Crankies are used to give pictures to stories, poems, songs, and all styles of creative writing. The storyteller or singer cranks the dowels, and the picture moves with the story. Crankies can be taken in many creative directions — they can be back-lit, or made with quilts — as large as a stage backdrop, or small as a match box — they can be about anything, and the art can be in any style, they can accompany any story, poem or song. In the spirit of collaboration, participation, and inspiration they are the theme of the festival. In honour of Mitch Podalak - Leonard Podolak Our founder, and my father, Mitch Podolak, recently passed away. Mitch was a co-founder and the founding Artistic Director of the Winnipeg Folk Festival, which held its first festival in 1974. He also founded the Winnipeg International Children’s Festival in 1982, and co-founded the West End Cultural Center in 1987. My dad’s main goal behind starting all of these endeavors was to make the world a better and more fun place. Every one of these organizations owe their continued existence and success to armies of community volunteers, and community partners — they are the lifeblood of these projects. Mitch thought that if everyone worked in concert, there could be no limit to human endeavor, and he put that energy in presenting folk music, because it has proven to be one of the most powerful voices to make the world just and right, and was the best tool for starting a revolution. When you're 25 years old, as my father was starting the Winnipeg Folk Festival, you think these things are still possible. This is how he started his revolution, and it continues to revolve. With the support of the ArtFest, Winnipeg Folk Festival, West End Cultural Centre we are proud to present the 2nd Annual Winnipeg Crankie Festival, in honour of Mitch Podolak (so we’re also calling it “Mitch Fest!”). IN this way, we will honour the memory and the work of my dad, Mitch Podolak, by offering a diverse musical palate of traditional and contemporary music, featuring 90% local artists including singers, pickers, dancers, storytellers and vaudevillians, as well as painters and drawers of all shapes and sizes. We will also feature a handful of artists from across the country and the United States, giving Winnipeg folkies a rare treat. This will be an opportunity for everyone involved - patrons, volunteers and performing artists alike - to take part on and off the stage. All involved will be creating the experience. The daytime programming will feature folk festival-style workshops and concerts as well as a full schedule of classes with different styles of music, including stringed instruments, vocal styles and song-writing. Other workshops, to name a few, include Crankie-making, shadow puppetry and cartooning. People will be able to bring their Crankies to the open mic-style “Open Crank.” Everyone is invited to learn, inspire and be inspired at the 2nd Annual Winnipeg Crankie Festival in honour of Mitch Podolak.
