This year, FMO is bringing in international industry experts and Festival Artistic Directors from around the world - from Estonia to Austin, Yellowknife to Berlin -- providing attending delegates the opportunity to learn about new products and services for performers and presenters; interact with panelists during educational seminars and workshops; engage in lively roundtable discussions and private meetings with industry professionals; and to celebrate recipients of songwriting and lifetime achievement awards.
Registration is ongoing and anyone can attend -- musicians, agents, festival planners, representatives of related organizations, and music lovers are all invited to attend the conference. To kick off its 32nd annual conference, Folk Music Ontario is delighted to present the FMO Celebration Concert ‘fun raising’ event on Tuesday, September 25 at Hugh’s Room Live in Toronto. Soul rocker Julian Taylor is headlining the night. Opening artists are Cécile Doo-Kingué and Nick Sherman.The fundraiser concert supports Folk Music Ontario as an Arts Service Organization, dedicated to supporting the growth and development of the folk music community and industry, and tickets available here $20 Advance / $25 Door. #FMO2018 CONFERENCE OVERVIEW: The Conference starts Thursday, Sept 27, and the Registration Area opens at 2pm for badge pick-up and program guide handouts. A conference registration badge is required for entrance into all FMO functions. The Welcome Reception is at 6:30pm, followed by the first night of FMO official showcases, at 8pm in the York and Mavis Ballrooms. These ballrooms are adjacent, and the start times are staggered every 15 minutes in order for attending delegates to have the opportunity to hear all showcasing artists. The always welcoming All Night Jam Sessions run from 11:30pm-2am in the Mississauga Ballroom Foyer nightly and are open to all. On Friday, FMO kicks into high gear with breakfast for all (while supplies last) in - Mississauga Ballroom A & D, from 8:30-10:30am. Highlights for the day include music & industry panels which start at 10am; afternoon sponsored showcases beginning at noon, Lightning Talks (pre-register HERE), the FMO Awards Showcase, official FMO showcases, and the first night of the private showcases, which are held on the music floor. A map of all event locations (host hotel floorplans) is available via the FMO App. Saturday sees another action packed day for all FMO delegates, beginning with breakfast for all (while supplies last) in the Mississauga Ballroom A & D, from 8:30 - 10:30am, followed by the FMO Annual General Meeting, running from 10:30am - noon. Music & Industry panels begin at 10am and run until 7pm,and at noon afternoon sponsored showcases begin, running until 2pm. Night time receptions start at 5:30pm, followed by the final night of official showcases, 8 - 11:30pm, and private showcases, which run until 3am. Sunday is the final day of #FMO2018, with the FMO Awards Brunch happening in the Mississauga Ballrooms A & D, from 11am - noon, followed by the Estelle Klein Awards Interview. FMO invites all delegates to participate in the closing Gospel Sing-Along, from noon - 1:30pm in the Mississauga Foyer. PANELS, WORKSHOPS & MORE: FMO Panels offer a diverse and educational opportunity for delegates to learn from and interact with experts from a variety of fields from around the world. Several key music industry organizations are offering panels, workshops and showcases at the Conference, and delegates are invited to attend all open sessions. TicketPro is presenting the FMO Developing Artists Program Developing throughout the weekend. This program has two streams, artist and presenter,and participants were chosen for their interest, ability and experience. SOCAN is hosting a Songwriting Masterclasses session, details to follow. MusicOntario is presenting two key workshops, one on sound and one on house touring networks, and the Unison Benevolent Fund is offering a Mental Health panel. Manitoba Music, in partnership with FACTOR, is presenting an Indigenous Artists Panel and Showcase.These events are in addition to the meetings and closed door sessions for artists, festival presenters and industry, view the 2018 FMO full Panel schedule is HERE. Registration is ongoing throughout the conference in the Vista Foyer, while instrument lockup & DJ drop boxes are open in the Arista Room, from 7 - 10pm Thursday and from 9am - 11pm on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, pick up runs from 9am - 1pm. First time attendees, be sure to fill out this form, and and to email it to jellis@folkmusicontario.ca with “Drop Box Application” in the Subject line by September 24, 2018. This is a service provided by FMO for artists to bring promotional CDs to share with DJs via their own personal drop boxes for future airplay consideration. EXPORT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM & LIGHTNING TALKS: Presented by Folk Music Ontario, the 2018 Export Development Program (EDP) assists folk musicians and businesses in accessing new markets in Canada, USA, UK and India by bringing more than 25 delegates (festival ADs, presenters, agents, publicists, etc.) to the Folk Music Ontario conference. EDP delegates are matched with more than 50 participating artists for one-on-one meetings, mentoring and networking receptions. In addition to these closed events, Export Development Program delegates are available throughout the conference as they attend networking events and lead panels focusing on export topics. AWARDS & VOTING: The Folk Music Ontario Awards are presented annually at the Folk Music Ontario Conference. Winners perform at the Awards Showcase and are recognized at the Awards Brunch. FMO invites all 2018 delegates to the FMO Awards Showcase Friday, Sept 28, from 5:30 - 7:30pm, presented by Canadian Federation of Musicians, in the Vista Salon. On Sunday the FMO Awards Brunch runs from 9:30 - 11am in the Mississauga Ballroom A & D followed by the Estelle Klein Awards Interview. The awards and bursary for 2018 to be handed out are:Stingray Rising Star Award (sponsored by Stingray Music); Songs From the Heart Awards (presented by Folk Music Ontario); Colleen Peterson Award (presented by Ontario Arts Council); Recording Artist of the Year (sponsored by ACTRA-RACS); Website Award (presented by Bandzoogle) NEW AWARD FOR 2018; Setting the Stage Award (sponsored by Music Canada Live) NEW AWARD FOR 2018!; Estelle Klein Award; and the Taylor Mitchell Bursary. Over the weekend, FMO Board Voting occurs in the Vista Foyer, followed by the FMO Annual General Meeting, which occurs Saturday, Sept 29, from 10:30am - noon in the Mississauga Ballroom A & D, and is open to all FMO members. SILENT AUCTION: Don’t miss the annual Silent Auction for your chance to bid on Conference registrations, tickets to shows, masterclass sessions with experts, CD collections, weekend festival passes & tickets, photographer, studio and songwriting sessions and so much more! Place bids for the silent auction in the Mississauga Ballroom Foyer. The Silent Auction is FMOs main fundraiser each year and always offers items and opportunities that can only be found at the FMO Auction. Items are available for viewing, and bidding opens at 10am on Friday and Saturday and closes Saturday at 8pm. SCHEDULE, SHOWCASES & RECEPTIONS: Afternoon and evening sponsored showcases and receptions offer even more opportunities to network with booking agents, artists, labels and industry. For the first time in FMO history, international bands will be performing at the conference - Elephant Sessions and Skerryvore will be performing at the Scottish Showcases, Friday, September 28 in the Mavis Room from 12 pm – 2 pm; and Saturday, September 29 in Vista Salon A & B from 6:30 – 7:30 pm.
