[WINNIPEG - September 14, 2018] Home Routes/Chemin Chez Nous is excited to announce the full schedule forworkshops and performances at the First Annual Winnipeg Crankie Festival, which takes place Sept 21-23 in Winnipeg.  Crankies, the forerunner of modern film, are a storytelling art form popular in the 19th Century and are the theme around Evening variety show performances, which feature feature local Winnipeg and headlining International performers, weekend workshops, open jams and more.

A Crankie, often referred to as a moving panorama, is a 19th century folk art form. The term “Crankie” came from when the storyteller would turn the “crank,” moving the images to visualize the story. Crankies are stories illustrated on a scroll, either painted, drawn or cut from the paper. They are pulled through wooden boxes and hand-cranked by the performer. Audiences view the moving back-lit images.

The Winnipeg Crankie Festival is unique, and one of only a handful in North America celebrating Crankies and the art of storytelling together.  Over the weekend attendees can participate in unique cross media collaborations with different artists and performers from Winnipeg and beyond. The Festival provides an opportunity for artists to collaborate on multimedia projects: James Culleton with the D Rangers, Sue Truman with Scott Nolan are a couple of examples. These interactive collaborations invite attendees to learn from, discuss their creations and projects (and Crankies) and even perform on stage at the Open  Crank on Sunday.

The weekend long workshop program includes crankie making, instruction in various acoustic instruments and vocal styles, as well as open jams sessions hosted by local music organizations, community potluck and so much more! All events are family friendly and geared towards all ages. All performances and workshops take place at the Crescent Fort Rouge United Church,

Festival Executive Director Leonard Podolak says of the Festival: "The 1st Annual Winnipeg Crankie Festival offers people a unique opportunity as far as what it means to attend a festival. Not only can folks come to enjoy the music with their families, they can come and learn the music, in intimate workshops with many of Winnipeg's finest musicians. There is even an opportunity for festivarians (attendees) to perform on the Cranktuary Main Stage alongside festival headliners, if they wish, with their Crankies, in Winnipeg's first Open Crank, one of the featured shows --  Come On Down!"

The festival will benefit Home Routes FolkSchool, a new educational project that is part of the  Winnipeg-based house concert network Home Routes/Chemin Chez Nous. Tickets are on sale now through the Home Routes website and offer a variety of pricing options to suit any budget, including single tickets or weekend pass options: homeroutes.ca/crankiefestival

Workshops include “Crankie Making” with Sue Truman, (image, TheCrankieFactory) along with workshops facilitated by Duhks founder, and banjoist, Leonard Podolak as well as other featured performers on; ukulele, guitar, fiddle, banjo, percussion, vocal styles, jams and more!

The festival kicks off with a Friday night concert and concludes with a Sunday evening Grand Finale, with a special Gospel Crankie Sunday morning Church Service featuring Cara Luft (The Small Glories). Also on Sunday, rom 12:30 - 5pm, there will be an Open Crank Session, where members of the public are invited to perform alongside a featured Winnipeg Artists session in the Sanctuary.

Evening shows occur on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday starting at 7pm over the weekend of Sept 21-23, featuring established and celebrated Folk Musicians from Winnipeg and beyond. Headlining acts from Winnipeg are: The Small Glories; Del Barber; Scott Nolan, Sheena Rattai, and Daniel Peloquin Hopfner from Red Moon Road; The D.Rangers; Grace Haribi; Heather Bishop;  Double The Trouble; and Nathan Rogers. As well, a feature performance by Al  Simmons. Canadian singer-songwriter, and fiddle player Sierra Noble, along with Manitoba artists; Romi Mayes, Walking Wolf Singers, and Jess Reimer and Jeremy Hamm.

Out of Town acts include Anna and Elizabeth, (VA)  who have almost single-handedly resurrected the “crankie” and who recently signed with Smithsonian Folkways Records. Sue Truman (WA) who is an Appalachian musician based in Seattle and is a respected crankie maker. Linda McRae (BC/TN), who is a singer/songwriter and founder of Express Yourself Writing Workshops for At Risk Youth & incarcerated Individuals. Peter Paul Van Camp — the Personable Poet, the Dimestore Rhymester, the Only Performing Poet from Coshocton, Ohio (BC) and É.T.É who were born from the meeting of three young musicians from classical, jazz and traditional Quebec backgrounds.

Crankies are a storytelling art form popular in the 19th Century and a forerunner of modern-day film, and the Crankie Festival is bringing together the finest from the Musical, Spoken Word and Visual Arts to introduce the community to “Crankies.” This will be a truly interactive and collaborative festival experience by offering a unique opportunity for all festival goers to participate on- and off-stage, in performances, jam sessions and workshops.
