The 2016 TD Halifax Jazz Festival presents free concerts and events July 12-17 at venues throughout the area including the Main Stage on the Halifax waterfront, the Dartmouth World Peace Pavilion, Hydrostone Park, and Halifax Public Libraries, as well as on Halifax’s favourite seafaring landmark, Theodore Tugboat. With so many diverse offerings at some of the city’s most unique and beautiful locations, virtually everyone has an opportunity to participate in the festival and enjoy a stunning roster of international, Canadian and local entertainment.
The Main Stage on the Halifax waterfront is the heart of the TD Halifax Jazz Festival with free concerts daily for fans of all ages. The FREE music offerings start at the waterfront at noon on Wednesday July 13, 2016 with Band Transatlantic, followed by Willem Paynter’s Hard Bop Band. Stingray Rising Stars Contestants Tara Kannanara takes the stage on the waterfront at 2:30 pm and at 4pm, Universal Soul rounds out the Main Stage free shows for Wednesday. Free Main Stage entertainment continues on Thursday July 14 with a noon performance by The Matto Reid Ensemble, followed by Roxy and the Underground Soul Sound, then at 2:30 pm Stingray Rising Stars Contestants Autobahn will play, followed by Bella Blue at 4pm. More Main Stage free shows will be presented Friday July 15 starting at noon with Harvey Millar, and at 1:15 pm, Andrew Jackson Group will play a free concert. Stingray Rising Stars Contestants Rachel Therrien will play at 2:30 pm, Riot Squad takes the stage at 4 pm. Saturday 16 July offers more free shows on the waterfront, starting at 12 pm with Big Valley Swing, The Chronos Band will play at 1:15 pm, Stingray Rising Stars Contestants FOG Brass Band will play at 2:30 pm and at 4 pm, Jeff Goodspeed and Augusto Enriquez: Eclectic-Us will play. Free programming at the waterfront concludes Sunday July 17 with the Chebucto Big Band entertaining for free at 12 pm, next will be the Tuesday Night Big Band at 1:15 pm. Stingray Rising Stars Contestants Zoe Leger will take the stage at 2:30 pm and at 4 pm, Donald MacLennan will give a free performance. On the weekend, picturesque Hydrostone Park provides the backdrop for more free concerts, starting at 1 pm and kicking off hourly on Saturday July 16 and Sunday, July 17. Saturday performers begins with the Morningside Jazz Trio at 1 pm, Tomatron at 2 pm, Keonte Beals at 3 pm and The Blue Lane at 4 pm. The Hydrostone lineup on Sunday July 17 features free shows by Rev Hank Trio at 1 pm, Alana York at 2 pm, Georges Hebert Quartet at 3 pm, and the George Carter Jr. Trio at 4 pm. Theodore Tugboat sets sail with Splash! Bang! Boom! A popular children’s attraction with two harbour cruises daily Thursday July 14 through Saturday July 16. Theodore Tugboat is the perfect location for the TD Halifax Jazz Festival to introduce young listeners to the magic of music. Sessions will be conducted by noted musicians Ross Burns and Dr. Henry Bishop, with two sailings each morning at 10 am and 11 am. These workshop are sure to be lots of fun, as everyone on board can participate and play some percussion instruments together. We recommend early arrival, as this is first come, first boarded. Halifax Public Libraries will host a series of free events including JazzLabs, a behind the scenes look at making music that includes artist talks, master classes, and interactive concerts. The first Jazz Lab will take place at Halifax Central Library, Thursday July 14 at 3 pm with The New Bridge and Friday July 15 at 3pm with Atlantic Cirque. The Alderney Gate Public Library will host the Prohibition Jazz Band for a free show on Saturday, July 16 at 3 pm. Saturday July 16 the Dartmouth World Peace Pavilion will host free shows starting at 10 am with the Tomi Allen Trio, at 11 am Kitty & The Katz, 12 pm Brogue Saxophone Quartet and at 1 pm Shirley Jackson. Not to be missed are this year’s partnered stages presented at Obladee Wine Bar (1600 Barrington St), Baton Rouge Steakhouse & Bar (1877 Hollis St), Lion and Bright (2534 Agricola St), and Rock Bottom Brewery (5686 Spring Garden Rd). Shows at partnered stages kick off Tuesday July 12 at Obladee at 8 pm with the Peter Manley Group. Wednesday 13 July Obladee presents Donald MacLennan Trio at 8 pm. On Thursday July 14, Baton Rouge presents John Chaisson’s Trio at 7pm, Willem Paynter Group will perform at Obladee at 8 pm, and at 10:30 pm, Tomatron with special guests will perform at Lion and Bright for a $5 cover charge. Partnered stages continue on Friday July 15 with John Chaisson’s Trio playing a free show at Baton Rouge at 7pm. Side Wide Talk with Sam Wilson & guest Vanessa Breiji will perform at Rock Bottom Brewery ($5 cover) and at 10:30 pm Garrett Mason will play Lion and Bright (cover $5) More free partnered stages are on store on Saturday July 16 with Georges Hebert Trio at Baton Rouge at 7pm, Taryn Fudge with Laura Roy & guest The Folk & Country Line will play the Rock Bottom Brewery ($5 cover) at 9 pm and at 10:30 pm The Halifax Bluegrass Jam Band will play Lion and Bright (cover $5). On Sunday July 17 Baton Rouge presents a partnered stage with Georges Hebert Trio at 6:30 pm, and at 10:30 pm, Tomatron with special guests will play Lion and Bright ($5 cover). The TD Halifax Jazz Festival offers free admission for children under 10 at the Main Stage for evening performances. Minors are required to be accompanied by their legal guardian (ID Required).
