Quiet Now - A Holiday Single from The O’Pears

Picture
The O’Pears are a Toronto-based contemporary folk trio made up of Lydia Persaud, Jill Harris and Meg Contini, three songwriters who weave stories that stir the spirit and capture the timeless character of folk music. “Quiet Now” captures the importance of slowing down over the holiday season, and valuing time spent with loved ones over being consumed by the hustle and bustle. A striking mix of tight a cappella and rootsy instrumentation, The O’Pears continue to bring a strong, honest voice to the modern female perspective.

Upcoming Dates:
December 2nd - Burdock Music Hall (Toronto, ON)
December 19th - Yuletide Show w/The Lifers at Silence (Guelph, ON)

About The O’Pears:
Toronto-based The O’Pears are a folk trio consisting of Lydia Persaud, Jill Harris and Meg Contini, three songwriters who weave stories that stir the spirit and capture the timeless character of folk music. “LikeThose Nights,” their debut album, captures soaring harmonies and a seamless blend, evoking the profound intimacy of Nick Drake, the sister-like blend of The Staves and the dynamic harmony of Crosby, Stills, and Nash. Live performances turn the loudest bar into the warmest house concert, with their endearing, unabashed personalities balancing the intimate sincerity of the songs. They recently performed to high acclaim at festivals such as Summerfolk, Great Heart Festival, Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival, garnered radio play across Canada, including CBC, and have been featured live with Royal Wood, Good Lovelies, Michelle Willis, and Coco Love Alcorn. Each band member a distinctly talented musician with a stand-alone voice, style, and stage presence, when these three come together it is breathtaking. A striking mix of tight a cappella and rootsy instrumentation, Like Those Nights explores lessons learned about love and loss through the eyes and hearts of young Canadian storytellers.

Anne Janelle Halifax and Truro Shows Pack “Mini-Music Festival” into Back-to-Back Shows November 28 & 29

[Halifax] Cellist turned songwriter Anne Janelle brings her signature blend of classically influenced folk/pop/jazz to the Maritimes this fall with shows in Halifax and Truro celebrating the release of her latest album, “I Didn’t Want to Break It” with an amazing lineup of supporting talent.

Join Anne Janelle for back-to-back shows, Tuesday, November 28 at The Carleton in Halifax, and Wednesday, November 29 at The Marigold Cultural Centre in Truro.

Anne is joined by special guests, Juno nominated musician and album producer, James Hill, award winning Ian Sherwood on saxophone, noted guitarist Jeff Torbert, and Symphony Nova Scotia violinist, Isabelle Fournier for the Halifax show.

For the Truro show, Anne is joined again by James Hill, along with Truro musician and educator Nick Fisher on saxophone, and members of the First Baptist Girls’ Choir.

Anne Janelle's latest music is striking for its big, bold, and confident sound, which follows up on the success of her earlier albums, including “True Love Don't Weep” (produced by James Hill, and winner of the Canadian Folk Music Award for Traditional Album of the Year), “Beauty Remains,” and “So Long at the Fair” (“inventive, entertaining, beautifully written and brilliantly performed” - R2 Magazine).

While calling Brookfield Nova Scotia home, the upcoming shows are a rare opportunity for Anne and husband/artistic collaborator, James Hill to play locally as national and international touring schedules keep the couple busy on the road. Recently, touring has become even more of a family affair with the addition of a new family member, their new son, who has enthusiastically taken to life on the road with his parents! These Nova Scotia shows will be a respite from touring for the family, and a welcome change to finding playgrounds and changing tables along the way.

CBC’s Bob Mersereau describes her music as "a crystal clear sound filled with warmth." “Absolutely brilliant,” declares Folk Diary, and Paul Symes of The Blacksheep Inn says Anne Janelle is “utterly world-class in every respect.”

Find out for yourself why audiences and critics love Anne Janelle and why she creates fans with every new album and live performance.
Anne Janelle “I Didn’t Want to Break It” Nova Scotia Shows:

Tuesday, November 28 @ 7:30pm -  The Carleton, 1685 Argyle Street, Halifax with special guests James Hill, Isabelle Fournier, Jeff Torbert and Ian Sherwood.

Wednesday, November 29 @ 7:30pm The Marigold Cultural Centre, 605 Prince Street, Truro with Special guests James Hill, Nick Fisher, and members of the First Baptist Girls’ Choir.

Spinning out the hits: Award-winning SpinCount chalks up real success

"Not only do they have an inherent passion for music, hailing from the retail and legal and publishing industries in New York, they have the skills and perspective to recognize and promote the deeply-rooted, culturally unique talent among Maritime musicians.

And it would seem the music industry agrees it's natural - if not right - that the two owners of the boutique promotions and public relations company, SpinCount, should be creating opportunities and raising awareness of East Coast musical artists.
The East Coast Music Awards declared SpinCount Company of the Year for 2017, 2016, and 2011, while Music Nova Scotia bestowed the same honour on it in 2014 and 2012.

Moreover, the Bridgewater-based company's clients, which it has attracted from throughout the Maritimes and the rest of Canada, and within the U.S. and the U.K., are routinely nominated for a spectrum of awards including Grammys, Junos and East Coast Music Awards."
Thank you to Gayle WIlson at The LightHouse Now in Nova Scotia for featuring us in the "Spotlight on Business" section!

ERIN COSTELO AWARDED PRODUCER OF THE YEAR AT MUSIC NOVA SCOTIA WEEK 2017!

(Nov 6, 2017 - HALIFAX) Fifty Music Nova Scotia Awards in 49 categories were handed out on Sunday, November 5 at the Music Nova Scotia Awards celebration at the Holiday Inn Truro, NS. Erin Costelo was among the winners, making her one of the few women to be awarded Producer of the Year by a major music industry organization, marking a hopeful shift in the industry.

According to TheStar.com, only four women have won the Producer of the Year Award in the 45 years that Junos have been handed out, and according to Cuepoint, since 1974, only six women have been nominated for Producer of the Year at the Grammy’s. Making Erin part of a small, but growing group of women recognized for their music production skills in North America.

Dana Beeler, who was awarded “New Artist Recording of the Year” for Hello Delaware album “My Mistake”,  accepted the award on Erin’s behalf, as Erin was out of town. Here is Erin’s acceptance speech.

“Last night I won the Producer of the Year award at the Nova Scotia Music Awards. Thank you so much to all of the artists who have allowed me to play a part in sharing your music with the world. Elise Besler,  Leanne Hoffman, Adam Sterling, Samm Reid.

Unfortunately I was out of town and wasn't there to accept it. Here is my acceptance speech. Thanks to Dana Beeler for reading it and being there to accept the award in my absence.

"Thank you so much for this award. It means a tremendous amount to be honoured in this way. I could be wrong but I think I may be the first woman to receive it.

Please take this as a call to action. We have a responsibility. As a creative community we are not reflecting the voices of everyone. And we are missing out. Music and art reflects our society and it has the potential to CHANGE our society.

Hire more women. By doing so, we will see ourselves reflected on stages and behind the scenes as producers and engineers, and as a result will be more likely to step into these roles. We need to hear the world reflected through these voices. It is crucial. Especially now.

I take this award as a huge responsibility. I promise to use my privilege to open the doors that I can. Especially to women of colour and trans women to help their voices be heard. Let's have a woman in this category every year. Multiple women. We do not all have the same voice. Let's hear from everyone."

Erin’s award winning album, Down Below, The Status Quo (Mar 2016) was released on Seayou Records in Europe and in Canada on Erin's own Label Venue Records with distribution through Pheromone Recordings. The album received multiple awards and nominations, including winning the 2017 ECMA for R&B/Soul album of the Year, Longer listed for Polaris Prize, Nominated for seven 2016 Music Nova Scotia awards, and was runner up for the  Folk Music Ontario – ACTRA RACS Recording of the Year Award.
