Folk Music Canada Announces Line-up for FolkNorth Export Event 3 Days, 22 Performances, 30 Export Buyers November 30 - December 3, 2016 Toronto, ON
(Toronto) As part of its ongoing work to build the Canadian folk music industry, Folk Music Canada is proud to announce its programming for the first edition of FolkNorth, an export-focused showcase event taking place in Toronto from November 30 to December 3, 2016.
Throughout the three days of showcase presentations, Folk Music Canada will present more than 20 artist performances, including a returning partnership with the English Folk and Dance Song Society entitled Crossing Borders. This initiative pairs Canadian artists with UK performers for a collaborative writing retreat, followed by in-the-round style performances. For the 2016-17 partnership, Crossing Borders will feature Ontario artist Oh Susanna and UK artists Hannah Sanders and Ben Savage.
With more than 30 delegate ‘buyers’, FolkNorth’s export focus will shine the spotlight on the Canadian folk scene, foster new artistic collaborations and build opportunities for artists to tour internationally.
Balanced with the export outlook is an industry development stream with workshops and peer meetings designed to help foster best practices within the Canadian folk industry through international dialogue with world class presenters, agents, record labels and managers.
FolkNorth strives to be a small-scale, high-level, invitation-oriented event designed to offer the exporting Canadian folk artist and industry a place to expand their business reach with an event anchored in Canada. Deliberately designed to be ‘not another music conference’, the event places quality over quantity in its programming and professional development.
Find out more about FolkNorth’s offerings by visiting the event’s website here:
To preview a track from each showcasing artist, we’ve created a FolkNorth SoundCloud stream here: https://soundcloud.com/folkmusiccanada/sets/folknorth

The Last Waltz Halifax – A 40th Anniversary Musical Celebration Nov 26, 2016 at the Marquee Ballroom!
Erin Costelo, Rich Aucoin, Reeny Smith, among the cast of Halifax artists coming together to recreate The Band’s famous final concert - Saturday, November 26th at the Marquee Ballroom.
It has been 40 years since The Band played their legendary final show at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. On November 26th, Halifax pays tribute to one of the greatest concerts of all time with a re-creation of The Last Waltz - featuring performances from an incredible lineup of over 20 prominent Halifax musicians - backed by the East Coast's most dedicated The Band band - King Harvest.
Halifax’s iteration of The Last Waltz will largely be faithful to the original, but will take some liberties in its adaptation. “We took some artistic license with some of the instrumentation of the songs and some gender reversal of roles that I think will make for some great surprises for the audience”, says the show’s producer Craig Mercer. “This is more than a show honoring the anniversary of The Last Waltz – it is a celebration of the incredible talent we have here in this city”.
“When musical friends get together anywhere in the world the songs of THE BAND are sure to be heard. It’s become a tradition for all ages”, says King Harvest band leader John Wesley Chisholm. “There’s something about the musical architecture of THE LAST WALTZ. Like Auld Lang Syne, they’re songs at their best when they’re shared with love and joy - that’s where the fun is. And that’s where you’ll find it at The Last Waltz Halifax.”
Tickets for the show are $20 in advance and are available at www.tickethalifax.com.
More info and the complete show lineup can be found here: The Last Waltz Halifax
So proud to work with Kevin Roy and very thankful to all the #folk #roots DJs across Canada who supported his record, Heartworn Highways!
The airplay it received put it in the No 1 on Earshot Magazine #folk #roots #blues charts for the month of September!

[Halifax] Drummer, Composer, Professor, and SoundPainter, Jerry Granelli has enjoyed an incomparable career in music. Now, among his numerous awards and accolades, Jerry Granelli is this year’s recipient of the prestigious Portia White Prize to be awarded in Halifax, Nov 5, 2016, at the Creative Nova Scotia Awards Gala, Halifax Central Library.
Granelli’s life story is the story of contemporary jazz. Granelli ascended from playing with the great pianist Vince Guaraldi at the height of his popularity while simultaneously exploring Free Jazz on San Francisco’s thriving after hours sets in the early 1960s, to establishing academic arts curriculums to indoctrinate and perpetuate alternative musical forms. A pioneer of `60s psychedelic sounds, a sideman on a Top 5 pop hit and a session musician for Sly Stone, Granelli is a forward thinking master in the art of music. Since the late `80s, he has recorded over 20 albums as a leader and/or soloist.
The Halifax Jazz Festival is proud to partner with Granelli as a creative force within the festival and in his role as an educator. Among his countless contributions to Jazz Festival, Granelli is a permanent faculty member and fundamental force behind the Festival’s Creative Music Workshops, offering an intensive opportunity for learning and performance for musicians of all ages for more than 20 years.
The Portia White Prize is the largest prize of its type awarded by the Province of Nova Scotia and is named for Portia White, an African-Nova Scotian artist who rose through adversity to achieve international acclaim as a classical singer on the stages of Europe and North America
The Portia White Prize recognizes cultural and artistic excellence on the part of a Nova Scotian artist who has attained professional status, mastery and recognition in their discipline. To enable the province of Nova Scotia to promote excellence in the arts by honouring an outstanding Nova Scotian artist who has made a significant contribution to the province’s cultural life. No one is more deserving of this year’s distinction than Halifax’s own Jerry Granelli.
The Portia White Prize will be awarded at the 2016 Creative Nova Scotia Awards Gala by Arts Nova Scotia and the Creative Nova Scotia Leadership Council. The Creative Nova Scotia Awards Gala is a yearly event that celebrates excellence in artistic achievement, notably in the announcements of two major awards, the Portia White Prize and the Lieutenant Governor's Masterworks Award.
