(Halifax, NS) – The TD Halifax Jazz Festival celebrates 29 years filling the streets and stages of Halifax with world class music and entertainment! Each year the TD Halifax Jazz Festival requires more than 500 volunteers to keep the show going. They are the heart of the event. It is their dedication, hard work, boundless energy, outstanding skills, unbridled enthusiasm and tireless commitment that make the festival a success year after year.
Volunteers with all skill levels are required. With so many ways to help out and be part of the excitement, from Box Office to Bar, Security to Social Media, Photography to Production, the festival invites individuals to check out the volunteer opportunities page for descriptions of each volunteer position. By volunteering at TD Halifax Jazz Festival, volunteers participate in an exciting internationally recognized event, meet lots of great people, and hear fantastic music -- all while acquiring new skills and opportunities for personal growth.
The 29th edition of the TD Halifax Jazz Festival takes place this summer, July 8 through 12. This year’s festival is bigger and more exciting than ever, with 14 stages throughout Halifax, from Dartmouth to Clayton Park, including the popular Main Stage on the Halifax Waterfront!

Brian Blade joins Jane Ira Bloom and Julian Priester as part of the Halifax Jazz Festival's Creative Music Workshop 20th Anniversary!
(Halifax, NS) –The 20th edition of the Halifax Jazz Festival's Creative Music Workshop takes place July 2-12 at the Nova Scotia Community College Waterfront Campus. Brian Blade joins the music education program as a workshop clinician along with special guest faculty Jane Ira Bloom and Julian Priester.
Founded in 1996 by percussionist Jerry Granelli, saxophonist Don Palmer and bassist Skip Beckwith, the Creative Music Workshop (CMW) has been instrumental in fostering a strong artistic community in Halifax and beyond. The workshops have provided inspiration, education and exciting opportunities for creative individuals of all ages, and the benefits of the program on students and the broader arts community have been profound. CMW alumni have gone on to become professional artists, educators and creative individuals worldwide. Granelli was a pioneer in developing this distinctive approach to education, which is now integrated into renowned arts institutions throughout North America.
The Halifax Jazz Festival is pleased to welcome this year’s distinguished guest faculty and workshop instructors. New York saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom is a pioneer in the use of live electronics and movement in jazz. She is a seven-time winner of the Jazz Journalists Award for Soprano Saxophone, winner of the Downbeat International Critics Poll for soprano sax, and a recipient of the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship.Seattle trombonist Julien Priester's career has spanned over six decades. He has performed with artists such as Muddy Waters, Dinah Washington, Duke Ellington, Max Roach, John Coltrane, Art Blakey, Charles Mingus and more. Louisiana born Brian Blade joins the team as workshop clinician. Blade is already widely respected in the jazz world as the drummer, composer and leader of Brian Blade and The Fellowship Band, which has released three albums during its decade of existence. He is also known as the drummer with many heroes of the music world, including Daniel Lanois, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Wayne Shorter, Seal, Bill Frisell and Emmylou Harris.
Creative Music Workshop students will present three concerts to share what they have been creating in a community environment and to debut new music compositions and collaborations between faculty and students. The CMW Music Workshop Concerts are free and take place July 9th at 7pm and July 11th at 7pm, at 1313 Hollis Street. The final student concert takes place on July 12th at 2pm at Alderney Theatre and will be followed by a 20th Anniversary reception open to CMW students, alumni and supporters.
The special 20th anniversary edition of CMW will take place at Nova Scotia Community College Waterfront Campus, 80 Mawiomi Pl, Dartmouth, NS. Students can select from two program streams: Core Program and Creative Process. Students of the CMW Core Program receive a free All Events pass, and Creative Process students receive discounts on tickets to the 2015 TD Halifax Jazz Festival.
