For Immediate Release, April 25, 2017 (Toronto, Canada) – The spirit of Music Monday stretches across the nation with spectacular showcase events in cities – from Charlottetown to Vancouver – as thousands of students, musicians, parents, and community members come together to create Canada’s largest single event dedicated to raising awareness for music education. Harnessing the unifying power of music, the 13th Annual Music Monday is a program created by the Coalition for Music Education in Canada which celebrates the power of learning and making music for all children and youth in Canada.  The focal point of Music Monday is the simultaneous singing of the Music Monday anthem, Sing It Together at 12:30 pm EST.
In honour of Canada’s sesquicentennial, this year’s National Showcase Concert takes place in Ottawa with a free concert at the National Arts Centre, live-streamed through the Music Monday website on May 1 from 12 to 1 pm EST. Hosted by opera superstar Measha Brueggergosman and Seamus O’Regan, MP, the event will include the premiere of "Strong As A Nation", the first in a series of videos by Cole Forrest a young Aboriginal film-maker and spoken word poet who recently won the James Bartelman Creative Writing Award.  The video, which features Indigenous drumming from regions across Canada interspersed with spoken word, has been created for a Youth4Music Aboriginal project.  Showcase Concert performances include a mass children’s choir, the Métis Fiddle Quartet, singer-songwriter Mimi O’Bonsawin, a harp and soprano duo, youth jazz and strings ensembles, and the Ottawa Junior Youth Orchestra. ‘Daybreak Over Jackson Street’ is Steph Cameron’s sophomore outing and several of the songs, including the title song, reflect Steph’s time living and working on the lower east side of Vancouver.

STEPH CAMERON - DAYBREAK OVER JACKSON STREET
“The songs on this record were selected for their depth and maturity. As I develop my craft, storytelling increasingly becomes an opportunity for me to empathize with and express love for struggling people.” Steph Cameron

The result is a collection of songs that showcase Steph’s storytelling songwriting style, one that works in perfect tandem with the sparse production style chosen (Producer: Joe Dunphy). The themes they explore of love, loss and finding joy when times are rough are universal. What truly rings clear is the authenticity of the human experience that the characters she sings about have been through.

Steph Cameron arrived on the scene like a bracing gust of fresh musical air with her 2014 debut record Sad-Eyed Lonesome Lady receiving unanimously enthusiastic reviews. “This is a monumental, brilliant album… heralds the crowning of a bright new talent,” declared Pop Matters in calling it the #1 Canadian album of 2014. No Depression termed it “a stunning debut,” while Exclaim! noted that “Sad-Eyed Lonesome Lady delights from start to finish.Steph Cameron is the real deal.” The record also made the coveted Longlist for the prestigious Polaris Prize in 2015.

Cameron’s evocative voice and perceptive lyrics continue to captivate, as does her evolving yet still fluent acoustic guitar work. “I continue to work at the tradition of folk, but old country sounds, particularly guitar, are prominent in this record.” she analyses. “I feel like my musical influences, artists like John Prine, have really come through here, both in the story-telling and the way my guitar is played.”

“FINDING YOUR GROOVE” Percussion Workshop w/ Inti Gonzales
APRIL 8th, 2017 3:30-5:00pm
Halifax North Memorial Library, 2285 Gottingen St.
Inti Gonzales is a performer with many years of experience in latin and world percussion. In this hour long workshop, he will be guiding musicians of all skill levels in answering the question, “what is groove?” and developing your own sound.
Originally from Mexico City, Inti began his musical studies at the age of five years old. Inti had various training and complementary materials, such as music theory, choir, music appreciation, organology, history of music, theatre, body language (corporal expression), and the study of violin and percussion.
His musical training as a percussionist has been particularly focused on studies of African, Cuban, and Brazilian percussion. This allowed him to participate in many social and cultural events, including the Festival of Percussion at the National Arts Centre in Mexico City, the International Percussions Festival, Montreal, The Halifax Jazz Festival, Halifax, and many other festivals and concerts. Inti has also facilitated workshops and tutorials, sharing his knowledge of percussion instruments, such as Bongo, Djembe, Cajon, Congas and minor percussion. Creator of "Zulkamoon" music band based out of Halifax, and currently playing with "The Chronos Band." He has collaborated with musicians like "Jorun Bombay," "The Caravan," et. al.

Willem Paynter Trio
April 15th, 2017, 1pm
Dartmouth Woodlawn Public Library, 31 Eisener Blvd.

Jazz bassist Willem Paynter has been part of the Atlantic Canadian music scene since 2005. During that time he has participated in several recordings and countless festival, concert and club performances with musicians from all generations. Willem has appeared in groups lead by Jeff Goodspeed, Bill Stevenson, Andrew Jackson’s “Blakey Project” and many more.

“FREE FORM” w/ chik white and New Hermitage
April 27, 2017 Doors 7:30, Show 8pm Khyber Centre for The Arts, 1880 Hollis St.

Join us for this FREE show at The Khyber featuring two new acts on the experimental improvising scene:
chik white: For over a decade, Nova Scotia artist Darcy Spidle has used the moniker, chik white, for various art projects. His latest efforts centre around the jaw harp, a pancultural, ancient instrument steeped in mystical allure. Inspired by sound poetry, noise, improvisation, Dada, meditation and nature, chik white's harp explorations aim to conjure visceral experiences through aural minimalism.

New Hermitage: The New Hermitage continues Andrew MacKelvie's lifelong fascination with sound. This collection of quiet, sparse, compositions set alongside field recordings asks the listener to consider the beauty and complexity of their sonic reality.
Andrew MacKelvie - saxophone & gadgets/ field recordings
India Gailey - Cello
Ross Burns - Guitar
