‘HOME ROUTES’ ANNOUNCES PLANS TO EXPAND TO ATLANTIC CANADA IN 2018

1/24/2018

Great Music Coming SOON to a Living Room Near You!

Picture
Winnipeg-based ‘Home Routes/Chemin Chez Nous’ house concert network announces plans to expand to Atlantic Canada in 2018, seeking to create a community of house concert presenters and artists in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador. Home Routes has been pairing artists with rural presenters throughout Western Canada over the past decade, presenting more than 7000 performances at nearly 1500 locations in front of 207,000 fans to date, generating more than four million dollars in artist revenue and royalties since its beginnings in 2007. This year, Home Routes is looking to extend their success to Atlantic Canada.

Nova Scotia Music Week got the team at Home Routes thinking about the Atlantic Canada region. Leonard Podolak, Executive Producer of Home Routes, attended Nova Scotia Music Week this past November, and immediately recognized the deep bench of talent and supporters in the region. “Nova Scotia Music week was an eye opening experience. and an ear opening one as well,” says Podolak, “not only was I blown away by the variety of talent -- not to mention the level -- but also to witness the experience of young bands playing all kinds of music from Hip-Hop and Rap, to Rock’n’Roll and Pop singer songwriter, as well as artists in the Folk tradition.... we love all great music, so along with the traditional Home Routes Tours featuring acoustic folk music, our overall goal is to expand our network into more music genres, making it truly representative of the diverse Canadian music scene,”  says Podolak, “to that end, we are seeking hosts in the region who are interested in presenting a season series of artists representing the many facets of Folk Music as well as a variety of other genres”

Expanding the environment for private concerts: Historically, Home Routes sought out presenters in smaller communities, who simply loved music and could host 25 people or more in their home (or other non-traditional space). Today, the series has grown to include presenters from private homeowners to larger venue owners. For the live music fan, attending a house concert offers a more intimate experience than a commercial venue as attendees get a chance to meet and talk one-on-one with the performers, and to meet other people who share their interest in music. Home Routes accomplishes this while creating new opportunities both for the musicians and for audiences by increasing access and quantity of professional performances available in often underserved areas.

Josie McKay, a presenter from Valleyview AB says of the experience, “Home Routes has been amazing. We’ve met so many fantastic, interesting and talented people. And we've been able to bring a musical experience that shouldn't even be possible for a town of 1800 people. I can't thank you enough for this opportunity…  We are looking forward to another wonderful year.”

Artists, especially emerging performers, appreciate the opportunities developed by Home Routes as well, as it gives them a  chance to hone their stagecraft and banter -- and you never know who you will catch before their career takes off. William Prince, winner of  the 2017 JUNO for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year, has this to say about the Home Routes advantages for artists:

“Home Routes was my introduction to touring. The first times packing my car and venturing out to places where me and my music were unknown, I was always somewhat wary because so many of my friends came back from the road with stories of rough bars and not the best living conditions - sometimes no living conditions at all! The beauty of Home Routes is the audience is so appreciative and supportive. Playing two full sets for a house of people is incredible. You can feel the response without amplification and you’re not fighting anyone in the room for your place. The hospitality is the real treat. Time spent with music lovers who cook real meals and open their homes as a haven of rest. It’s a beautiful journey. Home Routes is a treasure and tremendous support in keeping live music thriving and artists driving!”

Fellow Home Routes PEI alumna Meaghan Blanchard adds: “I cannot say enough about the amazing Home Routes experiences that I have been so lucky to have over the years. The Home Routes team out of Winnipeg works so hard to put the artists and the music first, and that is such an incredible thing. Artists feel this love, and so do the audiences. These tours allow artists like myself to cultivate new fans and friends across the country during the typical ‘off season’, while visiting towns and areas we might not get to on a typical theatre tour.  I have loved meeting the host families, and have kept in touch with a number of them over the years! It’s a beautiful way to experience music.”

House concerts have a triple function. They support artists’ ability to make a living, they make music accessible on a grassroots level to all corners of Canada, and they connect people -- a social engine that builds community. If you are a music fan who wants to learn more about becoming part of the series or if you are an artist interested in performing during the 2018 season, go here to learn more.

Home Routes’ programming emphasizes artistic excellence, diverse and entertaining performances that leave audiences breathless and wanting more. “As an organization we are born from Folk Music, and we are very excited to expand our tours of acoustic music to the East Coast,” Says Podolak, “in the hopes of adding our unique house concerts to the perennial mosaic of culture which flourishes in Eastern Canada.”

ABOUT HOME ROUTES/CHEMIN CHEZ NOUS:
Home Routes/Chemin Chez Nous was incorporated as a not-for-profit arts organization in February of 2007 to create new performance opportunities for French and English speaking musicians and audiences in rural, remote and urban, communities across Canada, hosted by volunteers in their homes and other community venues. February 1st, 2018 with the JR Smith Quartet, performing from 7 to 8pm at Halifax North Memorial Library, 2285 Gottingen Street. The JR Smith Quartet is JR Smith- Drums, Luke Arsenault- Guitar, Silvio Pupo- Keyboard, Matt Maclennan- Bass.
[Halifax] Ranging from spiritual to jazz, to hip-hop and soul, Nova Scotia has a rich heritage of African-Nova Scotian music. This year, TD Halifax Jazz Festival celebrates this musical legacy, presenting a variety of FREE Jazz Labs events that draw inspiration from the unique experience of the African-Nova Scotian community. Presented throughout the month of February - African Heritage Month - this exciting series of Jazz Labs includes a concert with JR Smith Quartet, film screening of Chasing Trane, and music workshop with Youth Art Connections and musicians Owen Lee and Shawn Downey, for youth who are interested in hip-hop, spoken-word and other forms of open lyricism

The TD Halifax Jazz Festival celebration of African Heritage Month begins February 1st, 2018 with the JR Smith Quartet, performing from 7 to 8pm at Halifax North Memorial Library, 2285 Gottingen Street. The JR Smith Quartet is JR Smith- Drums, Luke Arsenault- Guitar, Silvio Pupo- Keyboard, Matt Maclennan- Bass.

Rising from the deep African-Nova Scotian tradition of musical excellence, JR Smith hails from the historic community of North Preston. He is a drummer, composer/multi-instrumentalist who attracts instant attention. The ease in which he plays, coupled with his shy demeanor, belies his youth and disguises his dangerously smooth arsenal of creativity. Smith has opened for Aretha Franklin, Anderson .Paak, Robert Glasper, Alex Cuba, and Lisa Fischer --  meeting audience expectations with performances full of genuine emotion and technical fluency.

Enriched with studies at St. Francis Xavier and Humber College, JR Smith is primarily self-made and community built. This highly original freelance musician has returned to his roots to continue playing with local talents Reeny Smith, Carson Downey, Cyndi Cain, Chelsea Amber, Harvey Miller, the Sanctified Brothers, Nova Scotia Mass Choir, Dutch Robinson, Gary Beals, Owen Lee, Augusto Enrique, Jeff Goodspeed, Jorge Chicoy, The Lee Boys, Mike Cowie, David Myles, Silvio Pupo, Saint Thomas Baptist Church, and many more.

On Saturday, February 10th, 2018 at 2pm, at the Halifax Central Library, Spring Garden Road, Halifax Jazz Festival Jazz Lab will present a screening of the documentary film, Chasing Trane.

Chasing Trane is the definitive documentary film about John Coltrane, an outside-the-box thinker with extraordinary talent whose boundary-shattering music continues to impact and influence people around the world. This smart, passionate, thought-provoking and uplifting documentary is for anyone who appreciates the power of music to entertain, inspire and transform.

Set against the social, political and cultural landscape of the times, Chasing Trane brings John Coltrane to life as a fully dimensional being, inviting the audience to engage with Coltrane the man, Coltrane the artist.

On February 24th, 2018 from 2 to 4pm, The TD Halifax Jazz Festival & Youth Art Connection present JAZZ//LYRICISM//IMPROV Jazz Lab at The Bridge Collaborative Space: 5553 Bloomfield St, Halifax. Open to youth 15-25.

This afternoon workshop, targets youth who are interested in hip-hop, spoken-word and other forms of open lyricism. The goal of this workshop is to introduce attendees to the concept of playing with live instrumentation. Many youth have not had the opportunity to work with a group instrumentalists, instead using pre-produced tracks (an amazing format itself). There is huge amount of interaction and creative freedom that can come from playing with live musicians! The first half of the program will have musician Owen Lee and Shawn Downey working with experienced hip hop and spoken-word youth art from Youth Art Connection going through the building blocks of live performance, while the second hour will be open to workshop attendees to try out their own material with a live band!

Jazz Labs are FREE and for the entire family, offering a behind the scenes look at making music that includes artist talks, master classes, and interactive concerts. Jazz Labs are part of  Halifax Jazz Festival’s Music Education Program. Beyond sharing the relevance of jazz in today’s world, the Jazz Festival provides opportunities for artistic development and music education. Halifax Jazz Festival’s music education mission includes Jazz Labs, the Creative Music Workshop and Splash! Bang! Boom! on Theodore Tugboat.

The centerpiece of the Jazz Festival’s music education program is the Creative Music Workshop (CMW). The "CMW Core Program" offers artists of all disciplines and skill levels, aged 15 years or older, the knowledge and experience required to take their artistic practice to the next level. The program passes on knowledge not only about what it means to be a musician, dancer, etc., but what it means to be a creative person. In addition to learning the fundamentals of the CMW Creative Process, students play with each other for up to eight hours a day and receive intensive instruction from a renowned faculty as well as performance opportunities at the TD Halifax Jazz Festival.

"Ryan Hicks' new album is a great mix of influences by a multi talented musician. A perfect album for airplay as it touches on different genres and the hooks stick in your head for days." - Josh Haugerund, Director of CJTR Radio

Ryan Hicks WINTER 2018 TOUR
Jan 27 @ Bearcat’s Lounge, Regina, SK
Feb 9 @ The Exchange, Regina, SK OFFICIAL ALBUM RELEASE SHOW
Feb 10 @ Cornerstone Music Cafe, Calgary, AB

About Ryan Hicks:
Regina-based singer/songwriter Ryan Hicks is set to release his 2nd full-length album on February 9th and today, the video for the first single and title track 'Pulsing Colours’ is premiering exclusively on Live in Limbo. Ryan will also be celebrating the release of his new album with a hometown release show on February 9th at The Exchange. See below for more details.

About Pulsing Colours
“This album came to me with just as strong visuals and moods as it did melodies and lyrics,” says Ryan Hicks. “I was really inspired by David Lynch’s work, specifically Twin Peaks, and wanted to channel some of that world’s wonder, mysticism, humour, darkness and craziness. When I wrote the song, I imagined the song being sung from the perspective of a moon far away from other planets. Cold, silent, still and alone. This is a metaphor for how some people live their lives. It might not sound like it, but really it is a love song about someone coming into your life and making sense of all things. While you might not have all of the answers, you find the world is good and right when you are with them. This goes beyond romantic love, as there are people in my life who I feel bring clarity to the world when I am with them.”

Ryan Hicks makes melodic, cinematic alt-pop music – think if Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson and the Fleet Foxes made music for a David Lynch film. Since the release of his critically acclaimed debut album, Prairie Ocean, in 2014, Ryan has been hard at work on his sophomore release Pulsing Colours. The album, set to be released on February 9th, is a concept record of all of the thoughts, moods and emotions that can come to us at night.

Ryan Hicks will be celebrating the release of his new (second) album with a few select Western Canadian tour dates and a hometown release show on February 9th at The Exchange. For the most up to date tour info, please visit ryanhicksband.com.
