FOLK ROOTS RADIO W/ JAN HALL
Peter Stone from 100 Mile House joins us on this episode to chat about "Hiraeth", their fabulous new album of deeply personal and introspective songs about life, love, loss and the meaning of home. Recorded in Edmonton AB, with partner Denise MacKay, and Peter in the producer's chair, the album features some fine musical arrangements - including some gorgeous use of both violin and cello, alongside some fabulous harmonies. We also take a look at some of the best of the latest new releases.

(Saskatoon, SK) - After three years of performing across North America and charting across the globe, husband and wife duo Peter Stone (UK) and Denise MacKay (Edmonton) of 100 mile house return home with their fourth album, an independent release, ‘Hiraeth’. A Welsh word with no direct English translation, Hiraeth has been described as ‘a sense of nostalgia and longing for place or person that may never have existed’, a feeling all too close to Peter and Denise’s hearts. With their lyrically driven folk/roots music, somewhat in the style of Swell Season crossed with Damian Rice (although they will humbly balk at the comparison), the couple prepares to introduce Hiraeth to the world on November 18, 2016 along with several Canadian tour dates including Calgary, Edmonton, Canmore, Red Deer, Toronto and more (see below).
“When you hear a song about something you’re going through, it makes you feel less alone...like someone else understands. When there are elements of feeling embarrassed or shameful and you hear someone sing about it, too, that can really quash those emotions. It takes the power away” - Peter Stone
Wearing their trademark honesty firmly on their sleeves with songs discussing the loss of of a loved one (Hidden Springs) to the struggles and grief that can come with trying to start a family (Last Branch), Hiraeth is a conversation about our deepest fears and the ability to find hope in the darkest places. This co-written, lyrically-driven set of songs revolves around their unmistakable harmonies and rests on a musical landscape ranging from a single acoustic guitar to layers of strings, grand piano, and a choir made up of some of Edmonton's most distinctive musical voices. The album was self-produced at The Audio Department. The band for the album included Shea Connor (drums) and Murray Wood (bass), both of Edmonton band Scenic Route to Alaska. Classically trained violin player Scott Zubot is a regular collaborator and co-writer with 100 mile house who also contributed to Hiraeth.

To celebrate the release in Calgary and Edmonton, the duo will bring a big band: Scott Zubot on violin (accompanying them for all shows), a string section, a rhythm section, and more. For all other tour dates Peter and Denise will collaborate with one local cello or violin player from each city, announcements are soon to come.
ABOUT 100 MILE HOUSE
A fateful meeting on-stage at the former Gorilla Monsoon (next to The Horseshoe) on Queen Street in Toronto in 2003 has led the couple on a 13-year journey to share their unique brand of transatlantic folk music at shows and festivals across this great continent. 100 mile house were winners of the Emerging Artist Award at the 2014 Edmonton Folk Music Festival, and their previous two albums, Wait With Me (2013) and Hollow Ponds (2011), have garnered three WCMA nominations, two Calgary Folk Festival Songwriting Grand prizes, two Edmonton Music Awards and have received airplay across the globe, from the BBC in the UK to Germany, Holland and France. It has also taken them to the stages of some of Canada’s biggest festivals including the Edmonton, Calgary, Canmore and Vancouver Folk Festivals. Peter and Denise have lived in Toronto, Edmonton, England, and now happily reside back in Edmonton where they are married and have a dog and two cats.+
